Previous Classes

  • Workshop with Ronn Guidi's Oakland Ballet Academy

Danny Nguyen lead a workshop for the young talents of the Oakland Ballet Academy during the week of July 31, 2006. Check out Ronn Guidi's Oakland Ballet Academy (www.obacademy.com) for more information.

  • The Art of Dance as Social Poetry — A Brand New 6–week Dance Intensive led by Tiffany Barbarash

Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 4:00 p.m., February 28 — April 8 at the Alter Adaptation Center, 30 Cleveland Street, San Francisco, CA

More fundamental than verbal expression, dance is the poetry of body language. The skills involved in dancing with a partner are essential to effective communication, and underlie basic social fluency. Dance also promotes a level of physical fluency: developing the body to be as lithe, articulate, and spontaneously creative as the mind. Moving to different rhythms stimulates the entire body, inside and out — an inspiring way of being active.

This series began with a focus on connecting and relaying ideas to another person through movement and contact. Participants practiced moving together, sensing changes in direction and intuiting stopping/starting/turning, matching speed and rhythm. They began to develop the ability to relate with others spontaneously and authentically, and learn to communicate physical boundaries.

Building upon basic techniques of how to move with a partner, the fundamentals of a particular dance form become simple. Tiffany taught the basic rhythms and patterns of jitterbug, lindy hop, waltz, and tango.

  • Children's' Performing Arts Classes presented with the Association for VietArts and FIRST 5 led by Danny Nguyen, Tiffany Barbarash, and other artists of Nguyen Dance Company

Children learned to dance to Vietnamese folk and contemporary music, work cooperatively to create dances, explore movement, and tell stories in motion. These classes ran Sundays, February 5 — May 7, 2006 at the Tully Branch Library Community Room, 880 Tully Road, San Jose, CA 95111.
